As I sit by my son’s hospital bed, I wanted to share with you what I learnt today. Allergic reactions can strike at any time. They can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Never hesitate to use the epipen and always carry it with you. Our morning took a turn for the worst while on a bike ride on our normal walking track. My 8 year old son (allergies to nuts, allergic to eggs, dairy, sesame) stopped riding his bike to drink from a water bubbler. A couple of minutes later, he was white as a sheet, and had broken out in a cold sweat and was having trouble breathing. His lips were blue and was looking very sleepy. Was it asthma or an allergy? We hadn’t come into contact with any allergens so I was confused. He also wasn’t asthmatic though had used a ventalin puffer in the past. I hesitated. I had an epipen with me but in 8 years I had never had to use it. We had never even been to hospital emergency with an allergic reaction. I rang my husband who was at home nearby and he quickly drove to meet us. We gave our son some puffs on the ventalin and also some antihistamine. His symptoms were not getting any worse, but he looked very unwell. We rang an ambulance who arrived very quickly and took us to the nearest hospital. They didn’t use the epipen either as they thought his breathing difficulties was coming from his lungs. At the hospital the Dr determined his trouble breathing was coming from his throat and not his chest. After giving him a big dose of steroids, Bayley began improving almost instantly. Not knowing what caused the allergy is a bit scary. Was it the water bubbler? Something in the air? I guess we’ll never know. What I do know is that as an allergy parent you can never let your guard down, and don’t be afraid to use the epipen.
